Residents - Core and Elective Rotations
Registration and Orientation:
ED orientation is scheduled at 0800 in the ED Conference Room (AG143) on the first day of the rotation
Please review the Orientation Document and the orientation email as well as your schedule prior to starting the rotation [ADD Orientation Document link]
For those unable to attend in person, please review the orientation video prior to starting your rotation [ADD ORIENTATION VIDEO LINK]
In order to access the ED and to see patients, you will need to have your Sunnybrook ID and access to the electronic patient record, Sunnycare, prior to starting the rotation. If there are any issues with your hospital registration, please contact Sunnybrook Postgraduate Medical Education
Scheduling:
The schedule will be provided via email 2 weeks before the start of the rotation
Please see the attached scheduling guidelines and absenteeism policy for the EM program – these apply to all residents on the rotation
Senior EM residents can review the self-scheduling guideline on the EM Program website
Please carefully review the orientation document/email for procedure around changing shifts after the schedule is released
Illness policy:
Notify Ms. Paola Tiveron at Paola.Tiveron@sunnybrook.ca and call the emergency physician who you are scheduled to work with to inform her/him that you are sick (416-480-7207); we encourage you to speak directly with the staff physician who you are scheduled to work with instead of leaving a message with the unit clerk or charge RN
Please review the Orientation Document and Orientation email for additional information around missed shifts. All shift absences regardless of the cause are reported to your Program Director and on the ITER, unless arrangements have been made to make up the shift
Evaluation and feedback:
The EM rotation evaluation and feedback will be done on an individual shift basis by the supervising emergency physician. This is a great opportunity for you to receive real-time feedback and reflect on the shift experience
For off-service residents: there are paper end of shift evaluation cards in each zone; please drop them off in Blue zone at the end of each shift or hand them in as a package at the end of the rotation to Ms. Paola Tiveron. Your final rotation evaluation (ITER) will be completed in POWER by Dr. Alexandra Stefan or Dr. Robert Simard.
For CBD EM residents: your supervisor should complete a minimum of 1 EPA per shift. Your ITAR will be completed by your preceptor
For non-CBD EM residents: please complete the Senior EM End of Shift Assessment and Coaching Card
If you wish to arrange in person feedback at the end of the rotation with Dr. Stefan or Dr. Simard, please contact Ms. Paola Tiveron
Please remember to evaluate your faculty in POWER
We would like you to get the most out of your rotation and to use the feedback received to grow as a physician. Please consider bringing personal goals to each shift and discussing them with your supervisor. Have a look at the following Infographic. We also recommend an excellent book on feedback, “Thanks for the Feedback”
Teaching and education opportunities:
There will be 1-2 simulation session(s) scheduled for PGY 1’s and 2’s in the Simulation Lab, room E-225 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm during your rotation. The date(s) are listed on the house staff roster. Attendance is mandatory for the residents on the core EM rotation unless on vacation, post-night shift or at your program’s academic day. Ultrasound and EMS residents are welcome but not expected to attend. These sessions have no evaluation component (other than attendance) and are great opportunity to practice your resuscitation skills in a safe and supportive environment.
One on one teaching for senior residents: please schedule 1 one-on-one teaching session with your mentor for the month on a mutually agreed upon topic. Please complete an evaluation form at the end of the session and send it to Ms. Paola Tiveron
Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) Rounds are held at noon on Fridays in the ED conference room (AG143). Your attendance is optional.
